Three Units of Rourkela Steel Plant get the 5S Implementation Certification For the first time

Three Units of Rourkela Steel Plant under SAIL namely the Roll Shop – 4 of New Plate Mill, Mechanical Shop and the Air Station and Propane Plant – 2 of Oxygen Plant have been conferred with the ‘5S Implementation’ Certificate. The certification came after the successful completion of the Final Certification Audit (5S Implementation) held on 24th April. Notably, this is the first time that any unit of RSP has got the 5S certification. It is worth mentioning here that 5S is a workplace organizational method to keep the work space more organised in line with the words, Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize and Sustain.
Mr. S R Suryawanshi, ED (Works) presided over the closing meeting of the final audit and received the ‘5S Implementation’ Certificate on behalf of RSP. Present on the occasion were Mr. Debabrata Dutta, CGM In-charge (Services), Mr. I Rajan, CGM (Utilities & Environment), Mr. Atish Chandra Sarkar, CGM (Quality), Mr. M K Mohanty, CGM (Electrical), Mr. Ravi Ranjan, CGM (Design & Shops), Mr. Subrat Kumar Jena, CGM (HSM-I), concerned Heads of the Department and other Officers of the Plant.
The Audit was conducted by Mr. Sunil Srivastava, COO (TQM), QCFI, Secundrband) and Mr. V Ramkishan, Joint Secretary, QCFI (Rourkela Chapter).
Speaking on the occasion ED (Works) thanked the Auditors for their intensive audit and helping RSP to own the certification. He also commended the continuous efforts of the Departments and the Business Excellence team for achieving this recognition. He urged the team to work further to implement 5S in the other Departments too.
Notably, implementation of 5S will reduce waste, downtime, defects & Changeover time apart from improving safety, customer satisfaction, Visual Control, Standardization & Process Control. A clean and tidy workplace leads to greater well being and increased motivation which ultimately usher in improvement in improved product quality and employee satisfaction.
The meeting and the function was coordinated by Ms. Chaitali Das, GM In-charge (BE &IED) and the team of Business Excellence in collaboration with Oxygen Plant, Mechanical Shop and Roll Shop Collectives.
