The enterprising endeavor of the Shops- Repair Shop (Mechanical) collective of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant  (RSP) has helped in successful completion of a critical job of reconditioning of V₀ Roll of Hot Strip Mill- I for first time since inception. Notably, the V₀ Rolls are critical equipment of Hot Strip Mill, used in two High Reversing mill to guide the slab of 220 mm thick and roll into 93mm thick in three phases. Two vertical Rolls are being used having Maximum and Minimum diameter of 1200mm and 1000 mm. Every year two V₀ Rolls are being used in case of running in normal speed. The procurement cost of one new V₀ Roll   is around Rs. 14 Lakhs. Hence, it was decided to get the rolls reconditioned at Repair Shop (Mechanical) of the Shop complex.

        The Repair Shop (Mechanical) took up the challenge to completely recondition the V₀ Roll of Hot Strip Mill- I. After a series of brain storming sessions, it was planned to recondition the V₀ Roll using with available internal resources. This job was handled in an old and outlived Facing Lathe machine only. The main challenge was for making arrangement for the proper setting of the job and subsequent machining. For the same intendment, some exclusive template and attachments, tooling  were designed  in house to check the machined profile of the Roll.  The team involved overcame all the challenges and successfully reconditioned two V₀ Rolls. Considering the machining cost for four Rolls to be around Rs. 80,000/-, it saved a direct cash outflow of approximately Rs. 54 Lakhs.
