Overhauled Diesel Electric Locomotive commissioned at TRM Department of RSP

The overhauled Diesel Electric Locomotive No.1408 was commissioned by Mr. S R Suryawanshi, ED(Works) at Traffic & Raw Material Department of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on 25th April, 2023. Mr. Debabrata Dutta, CGM In-Charge (Services), Mr. T T Lahiri CGM In-charge (Services) Mr. Ravi Ranjan, CGM(Design & Shops), Mr. M K Mohanty, CGM(Electrical), Mr. Arun Kumar Behera, CGM (Traffic) and other officers and employees of the Department were present in the function organised at Loco Maintenance Shop of Traffic & Raw Material Department. Mr. Suryawanshi inspected the Diesel Electric locomotive and drove the engine. He also urged them to ensure overall safety in the department.

Notably, Periodic Overhauling (POH) is the most exhaustive preventive maintenance schedule and RSP is getting it done at the Indian Railways Workshop, Trichurapalli. All mechanical, electrical & pneumatic assemblies and sub-assemblies are overhauled, complete rewiring, denting and painting of the locomotive is done in the schedule. The Locomotive no. 1408 manufactured by M/s Banaras Locomotive Works, Indian Railways, Varanasi, was procured and commissioned in the year 1982. The locomotive was sent on for periodical overhauling at GOC, Indian Railways workshop, Trichurapalli on 29th October 2022. The same was received back at RSP on 13th April, 2023 after periodical overhauling. The locomotive will be used for transportation of raw materials, finished & semi-finished products through captive as well as Railway wagons. The POH of this locomotive has cost the company Rs. 2.50 Crores. Purchasing a new one would have cost Rs 10. 42 Crores. Overhauling of the Locomotive has improved its reliability, availability and horse power which will result in smooth internal and external movement of rolling stock. The function was co-ordinated by Mr. Prasant Tripathi, General Manager (T&RM).
