The technologically advanced Gas Insulated System (GIS) Sub-station along with new Integrated Electrical Control Room at Captive Power Plant-1 (CPP-1) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) was inaugurated by Mr. Atanu Bhowmick, DIC , RSP on 25th April 2023. Mr. P K Satapathy, ED (P&A), Mr. Somnath Tripathy, ED(MM) Mr. A K Behuria, CGM In-charge (F&A), Mr. Debabrata Dutta, CGM In-charge (Services), several CGMs and other Senior Officers of RSP participated in the ceremony. It is noteworthy that in order to provide higher reliability and flexibility, the above major project of converting Air Insulated System (AIS) Sub-station to the latest GIS sub-station has been implemented.
Speaking on the occasion, DIC congratulated the CPP-1 collective, Power Distribution, CET and Schneider Electric Team for safe and successful commissioning of the project and also exhorted the RSP collective to identify areas for debottle-necking and take up improvement projects for enhancing the performance of RSP.

The Executive Directors also congratulated the collective for the smooth and safe commissioning of the project . The critical technological upgradation which began in August, 2021 will help CPP-I optimize its operational efficiency and enhance the power system stability and reliability in RSP. It is noteworthy that, the 33KV sub-station of CPP-1, which was installed in late 1950s, consists of 48 panels, synchronized generators, synchronizing trolleys and multiple feeders distributed in 3 sections on double bus power arrangement. To take care of technical obsolescence and to enhance the reliability and stability of the critical and vital Category-1 power system in RSP, the 33KV system was upgraded by replacement of the seven decades old sub-station with a renovated and upgraded control room equipped with latest protection and control systems. The project being a brown field project, the execution jobs were carried out without affecting the production of different units of RSP.

Notably, the Rs. 22.5 Crore technological upgradation project was executed in the vital installation in multiple phases with the initiative of the Electrical team of CPP-1 and under guidance of Mr. B Sunil Kartha, Chief General Manager (Power). The project was carried out in close co-ordination with Power Distribution Department and other departments of the plant, with CET, Ranchi as the consultant for the project . The inauguration ceremony of the 33KV GIS Sub-station and the New Integrated Electrical Control Room was facilitated and co-ordinated by Sri B.Sunil Kartha.
