Upcoming Treatment System-1RSP going to be a major step towards achieving Zero Liquid Discharge

The project work for the installation of Treatment System-1 under implementation of Zero Liquid Discharge system is going on in full swing at SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).Treatment System#1 is a flagship project under implementation of Zero Liquid Discharge scheme at RSP being executed under the leadership of Mr. Atanu Bhowmick, DIC, RSP. The Foundation stone of the project was laid by Mr. P K Sahoo, ED (Projects) on 10th May, 2022 and execution is going on at a rapid speed under his guidance and control. The project is expected to be completed later this year.  It may be noted that, Treatment System-1, is the first ever and unique system in SAIL plants is being constructed at an expenditure of about Rs 140 crores.

Presently, Waste water generated from RSP is being disposed to a polishing unit called ‘Lagoon’ and subsequently the treated water is discharged to Brahmani River. After completion of the Treatment System-1,  1800m³/ hr of effluent water of RSP shall be treated and reused. The system will also significantly reduce the amount of freshwater required for steel production, thereby conserving water resources, and minimizing the environmental impact of wastewater discharge. Besides it will also comply with environmental regulations related to water usage and discharge apart from improving the plant’s overall efficiency by reducing the need for water treatment chemicals and energy consumption associated with water treatment. After implementation of Zero Liquid Discharge no waste water shall be discharge to river and treated water shall be re circulated to make up water grid of RSP.  The work is being executed by the team constituting Mr. A.N.Mishra, CGM(Projects), Mr. Dillip Kumar Sahoo, GM(Projects), Mr. Debajit Rabha, GM I/c (Water Management Department) the Project Owner; Mr. V.K.Yadav, AGM (Projects) the Project Manager and Mr.VVR Murthy, GM (Environment), the Project Co-ordinator. The team is committed and geared up for completion of this mega project on time.  Messrs Arvind Envisol, Ahmedabad is the executing agency of the project while Messrs MECON, Ranchi is the consultant for this project.
